IT Learning Steps

How to Start a Career in IT?

Ask yourself what computing skills you have syou can decide on specialisation. Currently the IT market in Iraq requires Infrastructure Skills but in the near future there will be demand for application developments.

We can simply classify IT specialities in tthe following:

Infrastructure Engineer or Analyst:

IT infrastructure engineer, part of a team, is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, testing, securing , and supporting the IT infrastructure that required trun IT Services in a company or government sector. The main technical skills required for infrastructure engineer are:

  • Build and support Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN) using RJ 45 cables, fiber optics cables, repeaters, ciscrouters, hubs, bridges with combination of IP addressing, subnetting, wireless, different protocols (http, https, ftp etc).
  • A network engineer in a large company is specialization and must know how twork for telecommunication organization such as the Ministry of Telecom in Iraq syou can use the services/fibre optic cables in the ground tlink different locations with each others.

  • Build and support Storage Area Network (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS). Both SAN and NAS are hard disks tstore data BUT not within the same computer or server. SAN and NAS are separate equipment only provide storage and connected tthe computer using fiber optics or RJ 45. The world largest company in SAN/NAS is EMC and then Hitachi. Usually an infrastructure storage engineer work with people outside his company such as EMC or Hitachi.

Support Windows Server (or Linux):

  • Build and support Windows Server 2008 operating systems on the LAN or WAN. A server is a normal computer but has high specifications (RAM, CPU, and Storage). HP and Dell are the largest company whprovide server hardware.

  • From Windows Server, install Active Directory tcreate logins for the staff but alsorganise logins in different Organisational Units (OUs) and deny or allow accesses.

  • From Windows Server, install and configure Domain Controller tcontrol all PCs or normal computers centrally

  • From Windows Server, install and configure DNS. DNS is a large topic but basically the services allow other computers ttranslate IP address ta normal computer name.

  • From Window Server, configure security policies tmanage the access tcomputers.

  • From Window Server, configure file shares susers can save their work remotely on the NAS or SAN.

  • From Windows or other technology, backup servers regularly and on daily basis

  • Build, configure, and deploy SharePoints (MOSS) servers. SharePoint is becoming quite popular and allow companies or governments tcreate and deploy Content Management solutions. SharePoint engineer must know Widows server, Internet Information Server (IIS), little amount of SQL Server, Active Directory she or she can install and configure SharePoints. Please learn SharePoints!

Support SQL Server database systems:

  • Build, configure, secure, backup, recover SQL Server 2008

SQL Server is a very complicated product. Its similar Oracle and SharePoints require SQL Server

SQL Server skills are again divided intInfrastructure and development (you will see soon)

Virtualisation: virtualisation is a huge topic and a specialisation on its own. Virtualisation means running many servers or workstations on one piece of hardware. The leading company in virtualisation is VMWare VSphere. Those whneed more information where tstart please contact us.

None can learn and master all the above skills and when you start learning focus on a technology and then you will learn the next one.

Application Development:

This include designing, implementing, and testing applications for organisations such as government, private sectors, web site development, collaboration tools such as SharePoint, programming with Java/ASP.Net/ HTML/ Javascript/CSS etc. Applications development can be divided intthe following tasks or specialities:

  • Capture requirements from business or end users
  • Model data intflow chart or diagram
  • Develop database entity relationship
  • Create SQL Server database
  • Create tables, Stored procedures, views, indexes, functions
  • Write program using C# or Java codes tconnect with database server
  • Program sharepoint and deploy website pages

You need to make your mind up as where dyou fit in the IT sector. Certainly this was a very basic categorisation and there are other aspects of IT such as IT Management Services which is toadvanced tdiscuss here.

Buy Hardware and Software

The real hardware for IT are very expensive and since you only need tlearn then we suggest you use your normal PCs tlearn. We assume the majority of you have PC or Laptops, however you need a good hardware specifications tinstall software. If you are tlearn IT Development then one PC should be enough, however if you would like tlearn IT Infrastructure then we recommend you have at least 2 PCs and treat one as server and the rest as clients.
Development Software: Microsoft Visual Studi2010, MS SQL Server 2008 (or Oracle),
Infrastructure Software: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, Exchange Server 2010 and may be MOSS/SharePoint 2010. The Windows Server 2008 R2 will allow you tinstall the Operating System, Domain Controller (DC), Active Directory (AD), Domain Name Services (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Group Security Policies, and other services. The Exchange Server will allow you tconfigure mail server (web mails are bad!) and how tmake your organisation tuse outlook. The MOSS Sharepoint can allow your organisation thave a dynamic web contents (this is a bit advanced). You can buy all this software in Iraq

Where to Obtain Learning Materials from?

This will include videos, ebooks, websites (search google), and working together

The know videos series are know as Computer Based Training( CBT). The most know videos are the CBT Nuggets and you can see them here http://www.cbtnuggets.com/

Unfortunately the CBT Nuggets are not free and you may get them cheaper in Iraq but at least lear about the topics of the CBT Nuggets which are relevant to both IT Infrastructure and IT Development.

Also you can download a program called bittorrent and this will allow you to do what so called File Sharing (QARSANA). Here is the website for the bitorant (small program)

http://www.bittorrent.com/downloads

Once you installed bittorant, you can then go to http://thepiratebay.org/ and you can search for ebook or videos to download them.

Note: There are lots of virus of http://thepiratebay.org/ and you need to read people comments. If no comments was written then there is a possibility of a virus in the software you want to download.

Websites: Google is full with learning materials and the most know website for IT Infrastructuere is here http://www.petri.co.il/ You can then search for the top you want to learn
